Pastor's Note - Fall 2022
What Can God Do?
by Pastor Rick
Let me begin with a confession. I’m a current affairs and news junkie. The Oxford Dictionary defines junkie as: a person with a compulsive habit or obsessive dependency. Ouch!
This obsession began in early college when it seemed that every student in America was reading, listening, and watching TV for news about the War in Vietnam. For me this was personal - my Selective Service (draft lottery) number was 6!
But today, my appetite for headlines has a big down-side. Simply put, in the digital age I’m often overwhelmed with dire news – like the headlines from Ukraine, Pakistan, Taiwan, Iran, Philly, Washington D.C., and England after the death of the Queen.
But in this, I’m not alone. All the markers of declining mental health are on the rise around the world. Which raises this question: Is it even possible today to find peace of mind and heart in the face of this information tsunami? The answer is YES! Especially for the followers of Christ.
Writing from a prison in Rome, Paul told the Ephesians that God “…has lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight … the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ … to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” (1:8-10) But that’s not all! We also “…have obtained an inheritance…sealed with the promised Holy Spirit…” (1:11,13).
In other words -- our Heavenly Father loves, and cares for His children in this life and the next.
We have been blessed with a calling to make known “…the unsearchable riches of Christ…” (3:8) As we labor together this fall for a spiritual harvest in Jesus’ name:
- We must love the lost and hurting.
- We must speak the truth with confidence.
- We must not lose heart in the face of trouble.
- We must be bold in our prayers.
God’s ability to answer prayer is powerfully stated by Paul in Ephesians 3:20-21 –
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
Q. What can God do? Far more, than we can ask, think, or imagine. A friend once told me: “So make your prayer list and then double it!”
So, get ready – and hang on. By His power at work through us, His glory will be revealed!
