First Communion 2021
This weekend marks the beginning of the third decade in the 3rd millennium. Since the beginning of this epoch the world has been in turmoil - and just think of how our world has changed since Christmas one year ago! But God has NOT changed. And we would be mistaken to think that these are the worst of times.
One of the most graphic descriptions of national sorrow and suffering is found in the book of Lamentations. In five poems, the prophet Jeremiah describes the grief following the destruction of Jerusalem (in 586 B.C.) - the jewel and dwelling place of God in the world.
Jeremiah writes: “...my soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is: so I say, ‘My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.’” (Lamentations 3:17-18)
But then with stunning clarity and conviction the “weeping prophet” declares:
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23
